~"Protesting Taliban, Poetry Book Published"

A collection of poems by 57 poets from more than 20 countries was published in August as a protest against the interim Taliban government in Afghanistan, which continues to oppress the human rights of women and other rights.
The book is titled NO JAIL CAN CONFINE YOUR POEM.
The book's editor, Nozomu Shibata, 47, a poet living in Asahikawa City, Hokkaido, Japan, calls for "people in Japan to know the current situation in Afghanistan.
The book opens with an appeal from Somaia Ramish, a poet from Afghanistan who defected to the Netherlands after the Taliban was restored to power. You who do not hear our voices?/Free people of the world,/you who have embodied liberty in a statue."
The authors range from a well-known French poet to an 8-year-old Japanese girl.
"It's interesting that the works come from different positions and are not monolithic. This is something I haven't seen in poetry collections before."...Akira Okawada, a literary critic who proofread the book and contributed a poem himself, gives this assessment.

The impetus for the book came from Somaia Ramish's call for poets from around the world to submit their works in protest of the ban on poetry in the region.
In February, Mr. Shibata learned of the movement and supported it, sending her poems and spreading the word on her social networking site (SNS) to deepen exchanges.
The Taliban established a provisional government after the withdrawal of U.S. troops in 2021. When interviewed by Kyodo News, the Taliban replied, "We do not prohibit our citizens from writing poetry. However, the Taliban's stance of restricting women's rights to education and employment has drawn condemnation and concern from the United Nations and other organizations.
The book of poems can be purchased on the Internet retailer Amazon.com, with proceeds going to an organization founded by Somaia Ramish.
Mr. Okawada says, "I hope this book will help people to imagine and be interested in the situation in Afghanistan.
The book is being translated outside of Japan and will be published in France in November.
